Šavnik’s uniqueness lies in its natural beauty. Vast green landscapes, dense forests, crystal-clear rivers and lakes, starry skies, and rich biodiversity of flora and fauna are just some of the features that make this municipality special. The area is distinctly mountainous, with terrain shaped by deep river canyon valleys. Mountain massifs, plateaus, river valleys, and canyons, with large variations in elevation, characterize the relief of this region. More than 90% of the municipality’s territory lies at an altitude of over 1,000 meters.
Of the municipality’s total area, meadows account for 12%, pastures 44%, arable land and orchards 3%, forests 19%, and barren land 22%. Seven rivers flow through the Šavnik municipality, cutting across four canyons, often carved into sheer rock faces, creating impressive waterfalls such as Skakavica and Crnjak. The beauty of the landscape is further enhanced by the two Pošćenje lakes, while the perfect natural scenery is framed by the peaks of five surrounding mountains. Šavnik also holds great potential thanks to its diverse flora and fauna, making it an ideal destination for gathering edible and medicinal herbs, as well as for hunting and fishing.
In addition to its exceptional natural beauty, Šavnik is also marked by important monuments of history and culture. Some of the most significant landmarks include: the House of Novica Cerović, the monument marking the death of Smail-aga Čengić, the grave of Mirko Aleksić, the Monument to the Fallen Soldiers, and the house of Borislav Pekić. Šavnik is also a municipality where 116 medieval tombstones (stećci) have been identified, some built into the walls of village churches, while others remain intact, preserving symbols and engravings characteristic of gravestones from the 12th to the 15th centuries. Two monasteries—witnesses of time, tradition, and faith—built in the 11th and 12th centuries, stand as symbols of endurance and survival through the many hardships that have marked this region.
