Tušina River

Tušina River

Calm of mountain streams

The Tušina River is a mountain river that does not have a single main source but is formed by the merging of several springs and streams. It begins its course below Mount Somina, near the village of Krnja Jela, at an altitude of about 1,200 meters. The total length of its flow is approximately 10 kilometers.

In the upper part of its course, the river flows through the flatlands of the villages of Krnja Jela and Tušina, from which it takes its name. According to local tradition, the name “Tušina” comes from the Turkish word “Tuh”, meaning “siga” (a sedimentary, calcareous rock). The riverbed and its banks are indeed rich in these tufa deposits.

The flat part of the river’s course ends below Borova Glava, where the Tušina carves its bed into a deep canyon more than 150 meters deep. After roughly ten kilometers, the river flows into the Bukovica River, near the Podmalinsko Monastery.

The Tušina River is home to an indigenous species of brown trout, as well as a non-native species, rainbow trout, due to the presence of a fish farm located directly on the river.
