Komarnica River

Komarnica River

Wild beauty of canyon depths

The Komarnica River springs in Dobri Do, beneath the southern slopes of the magnificent Durmitor mountain range. It is formed by several sources, the most remarkable among them being Šarban (at 1,680 meters above sea level) and Sopot (at 1,600 meters). Over its nearly 40-kilometer-long course, the Komarnica shapes landscapes of impressive beauty and hides numerous geomorphological and hydrological phenomena. The most famous of these is the Nevidio Canyon, the last conquered canyon in Europe, renowned for its inaccessibility, wild nature, and the challenges it offers to adventure enthusiasts. The upper course of the Komarnica, from Krlje to the entrance of the Nevidio Canyon, meanders through a narrow valley about 13 kilometers long, occasionally widening, most notably around the village of Komarnica. Shortly before the canyon, at an altitude of about 950 meters, the Grabovica River flows into the Komarnica. Below the town of Šavnik, the Komarnica joins the Bukovica River, and together they continue their journey toward Lake Piva.

Adding to its charm is a series of springs and water sources along its course, among which the Dubrovska Springs stand out for their abundance. The entire area is characterized by a dynamic interplay of natural processes: the upper part of the basin is subject to erosion, while in the lower part, glacial material from the southern slopes of Durmitor and the northern slopes of Vojnik accumulates, constantly reshaping the riverbed.

For visitors, the Komarnica represents a blend of wild nature, dramatic scenery, and opportunities for unforgettable adventures such as canyoning. The river and its surroundings are ideal for nature lovers, those seeking untouched landscapes and crystal-clear waters, as well as for fishing enthusiasts.
